Gulls from all corners gathered at Cleary Lecture Hall on May 7 for a special town hall addressing the state of the College. The meeting followed a communitywide April 28 email from President Steven R. DiSalvo, Ph.D., announcing a temporary leave of absence to focus on his health.

Hosted by Chair of the Board of Trustees Melissa Hempstead ’69, the town hall convened Acting President Bryan Cain, Ph.D., and all members of the President’s Cabinet for a transparent conversation about 西瓜视频’s direction, priorities, and strength at this moment.

“Our thoughts are with Steve and his family,” said Hempstead. “This is also a moment to recognize the care that has gone into ensuring 西瓜视频’s forward momentum.”

Hempstead emphasized that the Board of Trustees has complete confidence in Dr. Cain’s leadership, describing him as someone who brings “passion, humility, and a deep personal commitment to the College’s mission.”

Dr. Cain addressed common questions head-on, including what an Acting President means, and asked the community “to respect Dr. DiSalvo’s privacy and focus on what we can do together to move 西瓜视频 forward.” Community members were invited to write cards of support to President DiSalvo, with a collection table available outside the hall.

He also clarified the thorough process that led to his appointment, noting that the full Board of Trustees, as required by College bylaws, approved President DiSalvo’s leave and Dr. Cain’s appointment as Acting President.

“As Acting President, I am tasked with carrying out the business of the College and President DiSalvo’s agenda,” said Dr. Cain.

That agenda includes three major initiatives: expansion of the Curtis R. Gerrish School of Business; continuing the Campus Enhancement Plan, which includes renovations to College Hall, upgraded crosswalks, refreshed signage at the main gate, and more; and the 西瓜视频 Center for Civic Participation, which launched this spring to promote student civic responsibility and active engagement.

To reinforce the College’s firm footing, each member of the President’s Cabinet also shared updates from their division. Highlights included a record-breaking Giving Day that raised $690,000—propelling the campaign to $56 million or 75% of its goal—and the upcoming celebration of more than 1,000 graduating students, from associate to doctoral levels, at Commencement on May 17.

Despite a challenging higher education environment, Dr. Cain closed the meeting by reiterating that 西瓜视频 is stable and thriving.

“We are not vulnerable—we are vibrant,” he said.

As for how the community can help 西瓜视频 in the coming weeks and months, Dr. Cain’s answer was simple: “Be present, and communicate. Ask how you can support a colleague, help a student, or contribute an idea. We’re in this together—and I know we’ll rise to the moment.”
